"عندما كنت أذهب إلى درس السيّد حسين البروجردي (قدس سرّه) كان عمري ١٨ سنة ولم تكن لحيتي قد ظهرت بعد وكنت قصيرا وأجلس في طرف المجلس (ولم يكن يعرفه أحد بعد). وكانت عند السيد البروجردي عادة وهي أن يكتب الطلبة إشكالاتهم على الدرس وفي اليوم التالي يفتح السيد البروجردي هذه الأوراق ويقرأ المهم منها ويناقشها، وقد كنت أكتب إشكالاتي من غير أن أذكر إسمي حتى لا يعرفني. وكان السيد البروجردي حين يقرأ إشكالي يقول: "كتب لي بعض الأعلام كذا وكذا" يقول السيّد السيستاني: لا أمتلك اللحية وصغير العمر وقصير القامة ويقول عني الأستاذ هكذا فأخفض رأسي خجلا وحياءً.
